Who will be our April donation recipient?

Hi everyone!

GREAT job raising money this month for Animals in Distress. The grand total will be close to $1,300 including on and off-line donations. THANK YOU!

Now it's time to select another organization to help in April.

Please comment below with the name of the rescue organization or shelter you'd like to submit into our drawing. It needs to be a U.S. organization, an official non-profit (designated 501 C3 but most are) and has to include cats in its efforts. Make sure to leave your email address, link to your site or twitter handle so I can contact you if your organization wins!

We'll be taking submissions through March 31 and doing our random drawing and announcing the winner on April 1.

Here's how to increase the chances of your favorite being selected:

1. Tell your friends to come here and comment! The more submissions for your organization, the better chance you have of winning.
2. Subscribe to this blog and leave an additional comment telling me you did!
3. Tweet about this campaign and leave a comment telling me you did (with your twitter handle).
4. Blog about this on your blog! And leave a comment linking to your post.

Pugs and I are so, so, so, so excited to help another wonderful organization help more animals.

Email me with questions at romeo at romeothecat dot com.

xo!

  1. I vote for the Central Texas SPCA! www.centraltexasspca.org It's a great organization in the Austin, TX area (one of the worst parts of the country in terms of kill-rates for city shelters, http://www.statesman.com/news/content/news/stories/local/01/14/0114nokill.html) The people at the CTSPCA are wonderful and provide a great home-like environment for stray cats and dogs. Each animal stays there until it finds its forever family. In fact, a cat was recently finally adopted after being there for 2 years! They also have a nice Twitter feed @centraltxspca.

  3. My local no-kill shelter is awesome! Heart of the Valley in Bozeman Montana. They just moved into a new building awhile back (they were in trailors for many many years) and I know they could still use financial help! They are www.heartofthevalleyshelter.org.

  4. I suggest the group I work with, The Animal Center, in Newtown, CT. http://www.theanimalcenter.org We do TNR of feral cats and help homeless stray cats, too. In our few years in operation we have already saved almost 1000 animals. We really need some help to grow!

I also suggest a Twitter-pal, Kat5 Animal Rescue. They're doing a Benefit in April and could use our support, too!

  11. Central Texas SPCA in Austin, TX- as your first person said, we are a shelter focused on animals first. We are no kill, have been in operation for over 20 years and have placed thousands of animals with loving homes. I am a member of the board and also the face behind both our twitter feeds (@centraltxspca) and our facebook pages. Please pick us, follow us and become our friend on FB!

  12. Central TX SPCA! I volenteered last fall and ended up adopting one of thier cats. Not only do they take top rate care of thier animals, like mentioned above, but they also carefully select adoptors through an interview process. I've adopted many pets before, from both pounds and no-kill shelters, but I've never had to prove I was a good pet owner up front. It's a fantastic way to break the cycle of animals ending up back at the shelter.

  14. I vote for Classy Cats, a cat rescue group in the Keller area. They rescue cats from shelters, homeless cats, or from those who can longer care for their pet. They work hard to socialize and find the kitties lifetime homes. http://classycats.org/

    I"m gaylac from twitter. thanks!

  15. Let me add my support for Central Texas SPCA (Leander, TX). Not only are they a no-kill shelter, but the staff there makes extraordinary efforts to screen adoption applicants, to educate their adoptive families about pet behavior and proper pet care, and to ensure the best matches possible between pets and new owners. They operate on a shoestring, and deserve all the support they can get!

  47. I got my wonderful kitties from two different locations, both of which are great nominees. The Los Angeles County Animal Shelter in Agoura Hills tries very very hard to be a no kill shelter for all of its animals, to the extent it has added a room for the "older residents" in the cat area where they are no longer caged up. The fund cut backs in CA and particularly LA county may make it difficult for them to maintain this policy. I got my other two from Helping Persian Cats - which rescues Persians, Himalayans and similar breeds, fosters them until homes can be found and regularly holds adoptions to find these great kitties homes.

We recently started volunteering at their cat sanctuary. My favorite thing to do is visit with the FeLV+ cats who are kept in separate quarters for their protection. Mr. Classic, Snuggles, Olivia and Bart love to hang out with my daughter and in my lap and get lots of pats.

  77. I vote for Kitten Rescue. That is because not only do they rescue kittens but they rescue "more mature cats" This is very important.
We have cats that are very adoptable and live in our Casitas Shelter and are taken home to different volunteers if they seem healthy and ready to adopt. We have feral cats that are cared for as carefully as our domestic cats and are sometime adopted under strict guidelines to help people maintain their homes and businesses keeping them free of rodents. Of course they are fed and cared for as well!
We have cared for HIV and other cats with chronic illnesses that seem healthy but are not adoptable. Then of course we have a whole cadre of foster Mom's and Dads for our kittens to socialize them and make them just ready for you to take home micro-chipped and neutered :-) Hope you will contact us to visit our adoption locations and see our wonderful cats and kittens on www.kittenrescue.com We are Located in Los Angeles

  80. I vote for Kitten Rescue in Los Angeles. They take great care of their rescue cats. Helping the public learn to fix their cats and keep them indoors is primary. All cats deserve to live in a safe place, including those with the FeLV virus (known as Leukemia), wild cats, and kitties with behaviors people don't usually like. Kitten Rescue holds adoptions at many local pet stores each week. Visit them at KittenRescue.org, and on MySpace, YouTube, and Twitter. Every donation dollar goes to the cats (a few K9's, too).

We have been serving Southern Nevada for nine years with animal rescue and aggressive spay/neuter program. We spay/neuter 8,000 homeless, feral and owned pet annually. With the very slow economy things are getting tough and we don't want to cut services. A donation would be very helpful.

  88. Central Texas SPCA is a wonderful shelter - a very compassionate no-kill shelter that does great things ... like taking animals from other shelters when there's space, keeping those they take in until they're adopted, etc etc. Its a small low-tech shelter but a wonderful one! One kitty - Amos (who has a little bit of an attitude) has been there for years, and has sort of become the mascot! They're a great shelter and could really use your help.

  96. Kitten Rescue, in Los Angeles, please, please, please! We've adopted all of our kitties through their organization, have been involved in adoption events, TNR situations, and have volunteered our time to just take care of some of the lucky kitties being fostered by KR. There are some amazing, dedicated, self-less people involved in their organization, and I can't imagine our household without the blessings they have bestowed upon us.

  98. I vote for the Central Texas SPCA. It's a no-kill shelter that services the Austin and surrounding areas of Texas. The cats live in suites with several beds, climbing poles, hidey holes, and toys. The dogs all have beds and toys. Everyone is indoors and the dogs get to go outside daily in large pens where they can play and interact with each other. The outside pens are partially shaded, have toys, and wading pools in the hot summers. They keep the animals healthy and find them responsible homes. They're funded entirely from private donations and need all the help they can get.

  104. We vote for C.A.R.E. (Cat Adoption And Rescue Efforts, Inc.) It's a non-profit, all volunteer organization dedicated to the rehabilitation, care, and adoption of cats and kittens rescued from euthanizing animal shelters in the Richmond, Virginia metropolitan area. And they've got heart -- they even help woofies when they can. Our vet works for them at a way discounted cost but sometimes, like Newman who you can see on the front page, it still costs a lot to save kitties. We donate stuff and green papers to them whenever we can. We'd love to see them get this help! But we wouldn't cry if another got it either cuz well places all ofur needs help. I vote for the Central Dakato Humane Society http://www.cdhs.net/ who are a no kill shelter caring for pets until they find a home. Pets include cats, dogs, rabbits, ferrets.
Already under pressure, they have had an influx of animals due to the flooding.
While all the shelters are worthy recipients, I feel this shelter is in particular need of our support this month.

Working in a large, multi cultural society like Los Angeles is a daunting endeavor and Kitten Rescue has successfully spayed, neutered, TNRed, and rehomed thousands of cats and kittens over the 18 years they have been rescuing cats. Cudos to them and their excellent volunteer team.!!!

  136. I vote for Kitten Rescue in Los Angeles. There are countless unwanted animals in our city and they have rescued many of them. But there are so many more that need our help!

  138. Kitten Rescue in LA is a fantastic group that places 1000 cats per year in safe forever homes. They also go to great lengths to keep all of the kitties in residence at their sanctuary in great health. They also care for them all as if they are their own and give them lots of love. This is on very limited resources!! They could do many much needed things with that money!

  152. Hi Romeo! Just came over to put in a vote for "It's Meow or Never". You can check out their web page here: http://www.itsmeowornever.org/

They are a small rescue so being chosen as a donation recipient would make a big difference to them.

  161. Central Texas SPCA in Leander, TX. I volunteered with them for years before my children were born and I can't wait to go back once this last baby is old enough to drag along. They genuinely love every animal that comes through their door, and their shelter is SO in need of funds for maintenance and renovation.

  162. Did the extra credit, I'm now a follower of Romeo's blog :) Please throw the extra credit points towards Kitten Rescue of Los Angeles!!

Romeo, did I mention that you're pretty handsome when you make your excited face?? ;) lol

Good Luck to all, whichever organization wins, the most important thing is that animals will be the real winners.

  173. I vote for It's Meow or Never--http://www.itsmeowornever.org. They have had a really, really hard winter and could use some support. They work very hard to take care of the babies in their care, and the obstacles have been unbelievable.

  175. My vote goes to Kitten Rescue in Los Angeles. The volunteers are hard working, and take great pains to make sure that their cats are placed in homes where the owner and the cat are a good match. We've even adopted one of our foster kitties, Cletus, because he was just so damn adorable!!
