It's time to choose our May recipient!

We're close to wrapping up another successful month of our FURPOWER $1 Donation Challenge. GREAT job raising money this month for Kitten Rescue. The grand total will be close to $2,000 including on and off-line donations. THANK YOU!

Now it's time to select another organization to help in May.

Please comment below with the name of the rescue organization you'd like to submit into our drawing. The organizations must: be a U.S. organization, a designated 501c3 non-profit and include cats in its efforts.

Also, to be fair I can't accept "anonymous" submissions so please leave your name OR email me at romeo at romeothecat dot com with your submission.

We'll be taking submissions until April 30, 9 p.m. EST and doing our random drawing and announcing the winner on Friday May 1.

Here's how to increase the chances of your favorite being selected:

1. Tell your friends to come here and comment! The more submissions for your organization, the better chance you have of winning.
2. Subscribe to this blog and leave an additional comment telling me you did!
3. Tweet about this campaign and leave a comment telling me you did (with your twitter handle).
4. Blog about this on your blog! And leave a comment linking to your post.

Pugs and I can't wait to help another hardworking, deserving organization!

Email me with questions at romeo at romeothecat dot com.

GO FURPOWER!

R & P

  2. Romeo, we would like to nominate the Beaufort Community Cat Project for your May recipient.

The Beaufort Community Cat Project is a close-knit network of volunteers working to decrease the population of free-roaming (stray and feral) domestic cats in a seaside community near Cape Lookout, NC. The BCCP was formed in 2006 when several like-minded citizens banded together to address a community-wide issue: free-roaming cat management and the need for non-lethal methods as opposed to the traditional trap and kill(over 99% of trapped free-roamers are euthanized) method exercised by the local Animal Control. The Beaufort Community Cat Project (BCCP) is a non-profit charitable organization holding federal tax exempt (501(c)3) status and operates on a small budget of less than $10,000 annually.

We have blog post about it:
    http://thecreekcats.blogspot.com/2009/04/hit-me-with-your-best-shot-movie-monday.html

We also tweeted, our handle is thecreekcats!

  3. The BCCP uses the Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) method to help stabilize and eventually decrease the population of local free-roaming cats. Not only does TNR prevent unwanted births, it leads to a significant overall increase in the health of individuals and entire colonies of free-roaming cats.

In addition to its TNR work, the BCCP works collaboratively with other local animal welfare groups to bring awareness to the problem of pet overpopulation and advocate for humane solutions. The BCCP operates solely on donations and has limited access to reduced cost spay and neuter resources, thus limiting the amount of sterilization surgeries that can be performed per year. Any funding that BCCP receives is used for purposes directly related to its mission. beaufortcats.org

We have also subscribed to your blog!
    Thanks, Romeo!

When I lived there I used to bring them food and litter once month. They are so overrun because of being an no kill and running on donations only they really deserve some help.

  17. This is so wonderful, I would also like to nominate Serenity Equine Rescue and Rehabilitation, who was recently commended for their pivotal efforts in the prosecution of a local animal hoarder. Visit their site at www.serenityequinerescue.com to see more-

55 horses and 5 pigs have been rescued by this group.

Because the focus is on rehabilitation before adoption, all horses are brought in and healed - including shots, hooves, teeth, etc so we could use the grant to get teeth done and vet care for our current rescues.

  18. View our blog about this contest at: http://serenityequinerescue.blogspot.com/ and please nominate Serenity, we could use these funds to continue our good work. 25. I nominate the Franklin County Humane Society in St. Albans, Vermont. Franklin County is one of the poorest in the state and has many small farms. Unfortunately, many cats and kittens are often dropped off at these farms. We work with local farmers to help get these and feral feline communities spayed/neutered and vaccinated. With the farming economy at an all-time low, these farms and felines need all the support and financial assistance they can get.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I nominate Lake Norman Lucky Cat in Cornelius. They do, and have for years, a fantastic job controlling the feral cat population in this area. They spay/neuter, and work closely with other rescues who find homes for lots of cats and kittens.

  40. I am retweeting this, of course.
I nominate the Hermitage Cat Shelter http://www.hermitagecatshelter.org/ They are a cat sanctuary that doesn't euthanize "unadoptable" cats (and they don't cage the cats either!). You can adopt cats from there like any other shelter. They also take care of supposedly "unadoptable" special needs kitties, and they even have kitties with diseases that make them truly unadoptable.
They also have a program to help people feed their pets if they can't afford food.

    Quoting their site:
"The mission of The Hermitage Cat Shelter is to advocate for homeless cats in our community by:

    * Actively seeking permanent, loving homes for the cats in our care

    * Providing lifelong care to those cats who for behavioral or medical reasons are unable to be re-homed

    * Educating the public about responsible companion animal guardianship

    Vision Statement
Our vision for the future is that:

    * Every cat is spayed/neutered and is cared for in a loving home by a responsible guardian

    * People treat animals as the sentient beings they are, ensuring that they are neither exploited nor harmed

    * The Hermitage Cat Shelter is a world-class organization, providing sanctuary care for cats needing temporary or permanent shelter, and promoting the innate value of all animals "

  41. This is a great thing! It is very nice of you to do this. It is great to meet you.

I missed National Hairball Day cause my beans were out of town. I just wanted to let you know my favorite hairball ever is the one I left by the Christmas tree two years ago. It was a thing of beauty and I think my beans really appreciated it.

  42. Pasado Safehaven has paid for the medical care & found foster homes for hundreds of puppy mill dogs, neglected horses, goats & cows and cats who are victims of crime this year alone. They even temporarily took in animals who evacuated for floods. They do good work with love & compassion.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I nominate Project HALO.
Project HALO is a non-profit, NO-KILL rescue organization based in Charlotte, North Carolina. They are a 100% volunteer organization and are privately funded. Without volunteers and private donations they would not exist. They rescue homeless, stray and unwanted dogs. They take care of all the vet work including shots, sterilization and heartworm treatment, when necessary. All of Project HALO's animals are vet current and sterilized prior to adoption. They feel that this is the only way to run an animal shelter in a responsible manner.

    Video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwM6f0liHpo

California's largest no-cage, no-kill, lifetime cat sanctuary and adoption center. Our mission is to place rescued cats and kittens into loving, permanent homes; to provide a safe, happy and healthy home for unwanted cats and kittens in a unique, no-cage facility; to prevent pet overpopulation through spaying and neutering; and to educate the public about responsible pet ownership.

Since its founding 17 years ago, The Cat House on the Kings has saved over 18,000 cats and 5,000 dogs (not counting the 40,000 animals we have spayed and neutered!) and currently cares for more than 700 cats and kittens!

  54. I would like to nominate Kansas City Siamese Rescue. We are an organization that over the last 11 years has grown from a small breed specific organization to one that now averages close to 100 rescues a month and maintains a no-kill policy. We have averaged for the least few years a placement rate in excess of 70% annually.

We are an all volunteer/foster network organization and are funded solely through our adoption fees and gracious donations from our supporters. Any help we can garner is always appreciated! Thanks for considering us!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I would NOT cast a vote for Serenity Equine Rescue!
Your dollars are spent on making the owners property look better cosmetically rather than the horses.

  64. Hi Romeo! I'm Kate I've talked to you on twitter and so has my brother Sawyer! I'm @katiekatkou and my brother is @sawyerbeankou . Our mom and all our brothers and sisters were rescued by the Hillside SPCA. They are a great organization because they are a no kill shelter that also lets the animals roam around and interact with other animals. The cats have a large area with a covered outside section too so us kitties can still watch the birds. We are so thankful we were saved, now we have a loving adopted Mom who spoils us! We hate when she goes to work but love when we hear her car pull up at night!!

The Hillside SPCA is located in Pottsville, PA they often struggle for money and last year they were almost forced to close because of their high oil bill. We'd love to help them survive and were helping you could help! If we can't be picked for May could you give us some guidance and a good way to raise money for them??

Thanks Romeo! PS-I loved your article in the newspaper :)

Horses that come in frightened or mistrustful learn that they are in a safe place and that humans are their friends, horses that come in neglected and underfed get their needs seen to and their weight brought back up. We've got an amazing crew of dedicated volunteers (30 and growing!) who come every week to clean stalls and pastures and to groom and work with the horses.

  95. I would like to nominate Kansas City Siamese Rescue. I have adopted from KCSR and i can't say enough great things about this organization. They are one of very few no kill shelters in the area. All of the animals are in excellent shape before they can be adopted, spayed/neutered, and have updated shots. KCSR members are very loving and caring and make sure the pets go to the best homes available. they are dedicated beyond belief, are very patient when the adoptees (humans) have questions, and are extremely helpful in steering the adoptees in the right direction so they can provide the best care for their pet(s). I recommend this shelter to everyone i meet that is looking for a pet.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I nominate the Kansas City Siamese Rescue & Friends, Inc.

The work that they do is awsome. I have adopted a cat from them and the pre- and post-adoption assistance that they provided was fantastic! They go to great lengths to do screen and place the cats with the appropriate home.

  99. We would like to nominate: the Ginny Fund which Philip Gonzales started while Ginny was alive to feed and vet cats lives on. Each cat is spayed/neutered, vaccinated, provided with any needed veterinary care and fed daily. Good homes are found for some of the tamer cats and those with special needs who would not fare well outdoors are cared for in the groups' own homes. The Ginny Fund is committed to the 200+ cats living in 21 feral colonies lives on. Philip and other volunteers still go out in all weather to make sure all the cats are fed. It is a registered non-profit.

In addition to the feral cats, the Long Beach Animal Shelter closed two years ago, but cats and dogs are still cruelly abandoned in boxes at the shelter doorstep. The Ginny Fund rescues these unwanted animals and provides the same services and care that the colony cats are given.

The Ginny Fund is supported entirely by donations! It is a registered non-profit. Donations are tax deductible. It has no paid staff or directors, so more than 85% of each dollar donated is used for food and veterinary services. The other 15% goes toward mailings and necessary business expenses.

I would like to nominate Kansas City Siamese Resque. They have been wonderful to me and my four persian cats that I adopted through their organization. I got two brothers in 2003. They
were abandoned at 3 weeks old and they nursed them along as kittens before I adopted them. They were beautiful and so loving, and continue to bey treasures. In fact they were so delightful that last year I decided to adopt another persian kitten. Rene Martinez told me that they had a couple of cats that were abandoned on the streets and nearly starved before they were found. They had been shaved because their fur was matted and dirty. Rene allowed me to see a vet because the kittens (it turned out) had caught a virus. With the help of the vet they kittens survived and are happy and playful today.

I am so pleased with the treatment of these cats that I have urged others to adopt all sort of cats through Kansas City Siamese Resque. The people who run the organization are so loving and concerned with their animals. I am asking their organization to be rewarded.

  107. I would like to nominate Kansas City Siamese Rescue. Even though they deal mostly with cats, they found it in their hearts to take in a litter of abandoned puppies and their mother. I was lucky enough to adopt one -- the first dog I've ever had -- and he is absolutely wonderful! Everyone at KC Siamese Rescue has been so helpful and informative as I brought the puppy into my family of 4 cats. I could not have done it without them. Please reward this wonderful organization.

  112. I would like to vote for Kansas City Siamese Rescue, I wouldn't adopt cats from anyone else!! They do all breads not just Siamese and are even doing dogs and puppies. They also take cats back that they adopted out many years ago and try to find them new homes. They are AMAZING!!!

  113. I would like to cast my vote for Kansas City Siamese Rescue. We are a small but mighty kitty rescue. Well, mainly a kitty rescue. We have one volunteer whose heart is so big that she can't stand tbe idea of pregnant moms and babies being euthanized and so also fosters momma dogs and puppies and our group also helps adopt them out to wonderful homes. i am also a foster mom. It is such a fulfilling feeling to see a cat that was sad or sick or abandoned make a person's family whole. With kitten season upon us we could rally use all the help we can receive to spay the moms and babies and find homes for them.

Thank you for all tbat you are doing.

    Merry
